Senior girls enter OFSAA as champions
By Josh Johnson, Dryden ObserverWhile they knew that as the hosts they would be guaranteed a spot in the provincial championships, the Dryden Eagles senior girls' volleyball team never wanted to have their berth handed to them. Instead they had one goal all season long: winning the NorWOSSA title. Something they accomplished Feb. 16 in Fort Frances.
Playing the host Muskies in the championship, the Eagles' undefeated season continued as they posted a straight sets 25-14, 25-14, 25-23 to earn the title.
"We really haven't been focusing on OFSAA," says Eagle Sonja Wolski. "We have been working towards winning NorWOSSA."
Undefeated this season, with tournaments and other exhibitions included, the championship game was the Eagles' 40th win of the year, something the players are very proud of, says Wolski.
"I don't think any other team coached by Mr. (Todd) Desautels has accomplished that," she notes, adding that the team hopes to keep adding to the total during the all-Ontario (OFSAA) championships, which take place in Dryden March 6-8.
"We're extremely excited," she says of the tournament, which will see the province's best teams compete for the OFSAA crown. "It's really the experience of a lifetime and I'm really happy that it's happening in Dryden."
Wolski adds that the team has been really appreciative of the support they've received from the community and look forward to putting on a good show for the fans at home.
In the interim, Dryden will continue to fine-tune their game in order to put their best foot forward at the championships. Since the NWOSSA division has three spots in the tournament, there will be no NWOSSA championships. Instead the Thunder Bay champions will earn a spot in the OFSAA championship, as will the Muskies who enter virtue of finishing second place in the NorWOSSA conference. The other competitors have yet to be named with the exception of the Mentor College Marauders who will represent the Region of Peel Secondary Schools Athletic Association (ROPSSAA).
