Fort Frances Muskies
The Fort Frances Sr.Girls Volleyball team is comprised of not just any ordinary girls, they are very dedicated athletes that take pride in their team, school and community. This team is very skilled, with hard hitters, great setters, and intense libeiro’s. In addition to pure determination, the girls exhibit high spirits, and a true love for the game. The Muskies began the season with only 3 returning players, 9 new recruits and two first time senior coaches. In tournament play the muskies have steadily improved from an eighth place finish in December in Dryden, to fifth in January in Kenora, and finally a silver medal finish in Thunder Bay in February. Like any team, they have experienced challenges and barriers they have had to overcome. With two tremendous coaches guiding them along the way, and the support of each other, the muskies rose to every challenge, helping the team achieve a berth at OFSAA.The Fort Frances Senior Girls Volleyball team did not make it to OFSAA the traditional way. Since Dryden is the host this year, the Dryden Eagles had an automatic spot at OFSAA. This meant that a second team would also qualify for OFSAA. With that in mind, the Muskies focused on winning the semi-final match against the Beaver Brae Broncos from Kenora. The Muskies had defeated Kenora 3 out of 4 matches in league play but knew Kenora would not give the match to them without a fight. At the Norwossa semi-finals, the muskies won the first set 25 – 18. Kenora fought back to win the second set 25 – 23. The next two sets were intense with the lead changing hands many times. The muskies played with a combination of heart & hustle to win the next two sets by scores of 26 – 24 and 25 – 23. By focusing on their skill, determination and momentum the Muskies won a berth to OFSAA. The girls are excited to represent their school and community in Dryden playing as one of the top 20 teams in Ontario. Go Muskies!!!
